Tempeh is some hard stuff to come by in Vancouver surprisingly - the only place I've been able to find the non-marinated/burger form is Whole Foods. Yes, now the secret is out, it's in the freezer section and it's cheap too - way cheap - like cheaper than tofu cheap - like cheap like borscht cheap. I bought 3 packages but I should have just cleared them out - since now I'm down to a package and a half...
Why less tempeh you ask? Cabbage rolls my comrades, cabbage rolls. Now I'm the daughter of a Russian Mennonite and a German. Borscht, Virenika (pirogies), Zwieback,Portzelky, Paska and the list could go on is my life - it's how I define my memories, how life is determined, over a stove and around a table - while playing a good game of Rook. It's the one thing I want to be able to pass on to my children - not that they are going to be coming into the picture anytime soon...
I made an attempt at virenika back last winter - and I'll make another attempt at them now that I've pretty much got the whole cottage thing cornered when it comes to tofu... the dough based products are going to be substantially harder - paska is primarily eggs - Mennonite version of challah - which I guess I'm just going to have to look for a vegan version of challah and go from there. But all this is besides the point.
Cabbage Rolls is the point - and good ones have been found and created... not quite mom's recipe - I'm going to play with the recipe, but seriously these are good. And once again it's all thanks to Vegan Dad.

jennnnn... got an idea. you should show the "labels" thing on the side so it's easier to find recipes... like choc. chip cookies! ok, i'm gonna hunt those down now. along with your cupcake ones

what say we have a "heritage" night? I could make my swedish christmas pudding (I think I could de-animalify it) or go with my WASP side and make yorkshire pudding (not veganifiable), you could make your borscht, Leaha could make....??? something?
